Long before we met
I was equipped with the knowledge that all candles loose their luster
and I burned myself
with the newly molten wax of my discovery
The rigid, that gave such a convincing pretense of being pliable
just like you and I
Long before we met,
I looked at the wisp of emptiness where the flame used to be
and followed the wax formations
the trail of fallen romeos and juliets
and saw all the ophelias bobbing in the lake
and the meadow that sprouted samson's hair
Long before we met,
I lay side by side with ghosts
and swam in the belly of the wolf
Long before we met
The warm and loving
wisps of a once full life
may have encircled me and put out the flame
And when I looked you in the eye,
you thought you had the wrong end of the stick
but I knew that you held both ends
and I was leaning
on a completely different tree

I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
-Emily Dickinson
